Cloud Cover


My topic on cloud cover happens all over the world. In some places that are sunny, it is obvious that there is not as much cloud cover. Places of the world that do not get as much sun are more cloud covered, in simple terms.

People that make a career out of studying the sky are called meteorologists and building is called a meteorological station. The sky cover is measured on a scale with one digit numbers. With a number of 0, that means that the sky is clear (meaning no clouds). On the scale, when a number reaches 8-10, that means that the sky is overcast.

Clouds are formed when rising air rises and cools down. When the air cools down then the water molecules start clumping more and more together.

There are many types of clouds that form in our sky. Convective clouds range in distance across the sky from 100 yards to miles long. Stratiform clouds are the clouds that are big, they are usually caused by the large layers of rising air and they cover a large area of space.

Precipitation is formed from clouds when the ice crystals collide with each other and become bigger and bigger and eventually get too heavy and fall to the ground as either rain or snow. The other procedure that can happen is that they evaporate and transform back into water vapor.

The people and the environment are affected
by the clouds and the humidity in the air. On a warm sunny day the atmosphere gets heated up by the suns radiance. By night the heat from the sun goes down but the heat is still in the air because the clouds almost serve as a top of a jar and the humidity serves as the sides so the heat is trapped.

The sky cover by my predictions is predicted by the meteorologists when they predict cold and warm front coming into the area. By predicting a warm front they might get a better understanding that the air will be rising air will be rising creating the cloud form of a stratiform. When they predict that cold fronts will becoming in, they might get an idea that the ice crystals will be colliding and that either rain or snow will come out of the mix.

Cloud cover is not nearly as bad as some other weather systems. One of the cloud cover signs that might have to be watched out for is the funnel cloud. If the clouds are flat and dark, there might be a rain storm or even a thunderstorm. But when the clouds begins to look like it it is coming closer and closer to the ground, then there is good possibility that that cloud will soon turn into a funnel cloud and then a tornado.

Cloud cover comes in contact with everybody’s lives one point or another (Some more than others). We can all be glad that we have something so beautiful to gaze upon without risking our lives to see it.

In this experiment we observed the temperature changes as we heated the three elements up and cooled them down.
We heated them up by putting a heat lamp over them and recording the temperatures every minute for 10 minutes.

Over the heating period, the dirt heated up a near 4 degrees. The water on the other hand only rose to a temperature 1 degree higher. The snow stayed about the same temp throughout.

Into the cooling part of the experiement, the dirt cooled back down to the starting temperature. The water went back to the starting temp as well. The snow stayed about the same temperature.

In this experiment i was surprised that the temerature did not rise as fast as i thought it would.
